British Regimental nicknames Empty
PostSubject: Re: British Regimental nicknames   British Regimental nicknames EmptyMon Dec 13, 2010 1:15 am

The book littlehand cited was printed in 1916.

After cross referencing 2nd bns to old regimental numbers, etc. I am not sure of the nicknames of the 58th, 94th and 99th. Either nicknames weren't listed, or the nickname given wasn't specific to which battalion it was given. For example the 88th had the old 94th as its 2nd bn, but only one nickname is listed. So what would the 94th's have been while it was independent? Similar findings with the 58th and 99th. Any ideas?

Here is the list I came up with:
INF.
3rd - The Buffs
13th - The Bleeders
21st - Earl of Mar's Grey Beeks
24th - Howard's Greens
57th - The Die Hards
58th - ??
60th - The Greenjackets
80th - Stafforshire Knots
90th - Perkshire Grey Breeks
91st - The Rory's or The Thin Red Line
94th - ??
99th - The 9s or The Queen's Pets (per mac, see below)
CAV.
1st Guard Dragoons - The K.G.D.s or The Trade Union
17th Lancers - Death or Glory Boys, or Skull and Crossbones

How many did I miss? ;-)

British Regimental nicknames Empty
PostSubject: Re: British Regimental nicknames   British Regimental nicknames EmptyMon Dec 20, 2010 2:25 pm

The 99th (Lanarkshire) Regiment were normally just refered as 'The 9s'.......In 1857 they aquired the nickname 'The Queens Pets' because at that time they were very smart in drill and dress. As a consequence they were always chosen to find the guard on the Royal Pavilion, leading to the nickname. By all accounts this also led to a number of difference of opinions in the Wet Canteens of Aldershot. Also their officers wore more than the usual amount of gold lace on thier uniforms. The 99th's sartorial perfrection at this time is said to have given rise to the expresion 'Dressed up to the Nines'. There was an inscription '99th Queens Pets' cut into the stonework of All Saints Church at Aldershot, but it has since disappeared.
The Moonraker link came many years later when they were redesignated as the 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment. [Lanarskshire to Wiltshire - Work that one out]. The comment 'Dressed up to the Nines we think was in use before that time, but then linked to the Regiment.

Hope that helps
Cheers
