Littlehands Post with regards to Ignatius Philip Ferreira. Its states that "He was found amongst the dead" at Kambula

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Came across this......

"Ignatius Philip Ferreira, soldier and gold digger, born in Grahamstown in 1840 and died at Kranspoort (Zoutpansberg) in 1921. Ignatius Philip married Baltrina Erasmus on 14 Dec 1862, and after arriving in the Transvaal about 1870, he settled in the Middelburg district, where he was appointed field-cornet for the Olifants River ward in 1875. With the rank of captain of the Middelburg Volunteers he took part in the Sekhukhune War. He offered his services to the British interim government after the 1877 annexation and was commissioned to raise Ferreira’s Horse. He subdued Sekhukhune in Dec. 1878 and earned the C.M.G. and the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1879 he took part in the British action against Cetshwayo, and after being promoted to the rank of colonel, took part in the Basuto War of 1880. In 1881, he was placed in command of the Transvaal Mounted Police with the rank of captain but was discharged on 24 May 1882. He sent petitions to the Government at Pretoria on 7 and 26 July 1886, informing it that gold had been discovered in the Klip River ward and requesting that the farms Langlaagte and Turffontein be proclaimed public diggings. He then returned to the Witwatersrand and became the self-appointed leader of Ferreira’s Camp (which later became Ferreirasdorp) at Turffontein and a member of the first and second Diggers’ Committees on the Witwatersrand. The rich Ferreira Mine was named after him. He settled on the farm Kranspoort, west of Louis Trichardt"

Mistaken Identify at Kambula.

I fairly sure this is the same chap. Happy to be corrected.

Hi All.
Neil is correct I'll go with two people having the same name . In the Medal Roll under Ferreiras Horse , Commandant I. P .
Ferreira CMG Medal 78 - 79 Clasp . He isnt in the Casualty list for Ferreiras Horse in the Tavender Work . In ' They Fell
Like Stones ' by John Young he lists a Mr. J . Ferreira . Contractors Agent as one those killed at Khambula . Hope this helps.
cheers 90th.

Ps. Forgot to add the ' J ' in Ferreira among those killed at Khambula more than likely is the nickname ' Jonkey ' . So I think
definitely two chaps of the same name . Idea

Hi.

I've got a medal to a trooper from Ferreira's Horse so tried to find out a little information. I'm sure you know a lot of this anyway. Col Ignatius Philip Ferreira raised Ferreira's Horse which served with Wood's Column and in the Sekukuni Wars.. He was a gold speculator who set up a miner's camp in 1886 where Johannesburg grew up. He later formed the Ferreira Gold Mining Co in Johannesburg. His name is still celebrated there as one of the founders of the city, and his birth and death dates (1840 - 1921) are well documented. He was born in Grahamstown.

The other Ferreira was apparently born 10 years later in Pietermaritzberg and appears to have been a civilian contractor's agent when he was supposedly killed by the Zulus. He seems to have had a totally different history and worked in his father's auction business. Hope that's of some help - the information on this fellow is sparse to say the least.

Hi 1879 Graves.
According to ' They Fell Like Stones ' by John Young there is no mention of Ferreira's Horse at Khambula , they were
in Rowland's number 5 Column . So I dont think Commandant Ferreira would have left his own troops with Rowland ?.This is quite possibly why there is this mix up . As stated earlier '' J ( they more than likely used his initial of his nickname
Jonkey ) Ferreira Contractors agent was the one killed at khambula .
Hope this makes some sense Idea .

Hi 1879Graves.
Upon further investigation ' The South African Military History Society Vol 4 No 5 Profile Of An Army ; The Colonial And Imperial Forces Of The Zulu War Of 1879 by S. Monick . ( A mouthful I Know )

Ferrerira's Horse ( 1877 - 81 ) Colonel Ignatius Ferrera , CMG , Raised three Irregular Mtd Cps at Pretoria during the First
Occupation of the Transvaal . The first saw service against Sekukuni in June 78 . The Second , with a strength of 115 , served with
Wood's Column , and also took part in the capture of Sekukuni's Mtn in 79 . The Third Cps was known as the Transvaal Horse , had
a strength of 300 , and included two 9 pr field guns . It was in action in Leribe , in Northern Basutoland , where it served until disbanded in August , 1881 .
It goes on to say about Rowland's Column '' It also comprised originally the Border Horse and Ferreira's Horse . However ,
as these latter units were , during the course of operations , later Transferred to Buller's Command , they are discussed
under Wood's Column '' .
cheers 90th.

Hi 1879Graves.
A liitle more on I. Ferreira , He was an ex - Imperial officer but the books I found that in didnt give any other details as to
what Regiment it may have been . Do you have any pre 1879 Harts Army List's ? . I'm sure he would be in one of the earlier
editions . Idea .
