Regimental Order , 26th November , 1878 .
The Corps being ordered out by his Excellency the Lt - Governor , members will parade in heavy marching order
on the Market Square at 9 am on Friday 29th Inst .
Theo. Shepstone , Jnr ;
Captain Commanding N.C '
Of the 60 who mustered at this order , Matterson was one of them .
From ' For God , Queen & Colony ' by Terry Sole ,
Matterson , Arthur . Injured , date unknown . On his way from Helpmekaar to Maritzburg with several other Carbineers , and whilst on the road between there and Greytown his horse stumbled , fell and rolled over him , the result being a broken collarbone
besides severe bruises . He was taken on to Greytown
On the 20th Jan the Regt , now reduced to 57 men , advanced with the 3rd Column to their new camp site , under the peak
of a strange looking hill to the east , called Isandlwana . The regt had been reduced by the Hospitilisation of Matterson , Farrier Sgt Hill and Trpr Rock had for one reason or another left the regt and returned to Maritzburg .
Certainly they were 3 lucky lads ! .

He was injured round about the 18th March 1879 as that is when the story broke in the Natal Witness

Hi Kate
Not sure if the Witness was up to speed , my post from 10 yrs ago implies the strength of the Carbineers was reduced by 3 before Isandlwana , due to Matterson and two others being injured before Isandlwana ? .
