| From. Edward's great-grandson It mentioned that Edward lived in a house with his mother in Cardiff (a picture of the house was included) after being medically discharged in 1915. In fact, Edward died in 1893,..not very long after returning from Africa. |

| Hi All,
Edward Savage of the 24th Regt of Foot died in 1893, his widow, Mary, later re-married and lived at 13 Wellington Street, Cardiff.
It was Mary and Edwards eldest son, also called Edward, who was discharged from the army in 1915 and returned to Cardiff where he lived with his mother.

Peter
Thank you for your e-mail.
I'm pleased that our event is attracting so much interest.
A couple of points regarding the postings:
1. There were two Edward Savages. Edward of Rorke's Drift, who died in 1893, and Edward John his son, who was indeed medically discharged in 1915 and lived at 13 Wellington St. This is all in Kris's book.
2. Similarly, there are two Wellington Streets in Cardiff. One is Wellington St, Riverside; the other is Wellington St, Tongwynlais (a small village just outside the city). In 1891 Edward, his wife Mary , and family were living at 137 Wellington St, Riverside (see attached census page). Following his death Mary remarried and moved to 121 Wellington St, Riverside (1901 census), and then to 13 Wellington St, Riverside (1911 census).
The photo posted to the forum is 13 Wellington St, Tongwynlais.

Wellington St in Riverside is near the city centre and is a main thoroughfare, and there are no old houses still standing ....

Hope this clarifies things.
Let me know if there's anything else we can help you with
Regards
John

| Open invitation.
FRIENDS OF CATHAYS CEMETERY
The Friends of Cathays Cemetery in Cardiff cordially invite you to our main event of the year – the dedication of a memorial to Edward Savage, a survivor of the battle of Rorke’s Drift which was immortalised in the film Zulu. This will take place at 2pm on Saturday 4th June at the Cemetery. Some time ago we were alerted to the fact that Edward Savage was buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery, and it was felt that this was something that needed rectifying. Born in Newport, Edward joined the army in 1877 aged eighteen and sailed the following year to South Africa, where he saw action before being sent to Rorke’s Drift. When the battle started, Edward was in the camp hospital suffering from an injured knee. According to contemporary reports, he jumped through the window and ‘assisted in the defence, lying on his side and taking aim through an opening in a pile of biscuit boxes’. Following his discharge, Edward married, settled in Canton, Cardiff, and took a job as a council worker. Sadly, Edward died in 1893, aged only 32.
In arranging this event we will be recognising the losses on both sides at Rorke’s Drift. We are fortunate to have received a message from HRH Prince Shange, a descendant of the Zulu commander, which will be read out. We are also fortunate to have the support of Firing Line (the military museum in Cardiff Castle), The Royal Welsh, Mossfords. (a local stonemason), and a descendant of Edward who has been traced to Canada. I do hope that you will be able to attend and look forward to meeting you. Regards John Farnhill Friends of Cathays Cemetery 029 2041 2254 (eves) |

| I'm expecting some pictures to arrive over the next few days...and will do my best to post them here.
Meanwhile, BBC radio ran a nice piece on the event this morning on their breakfast show...featuring an interview with Dr. Paul Nicholson (one of the Friends of Cathays and an archaeologist at the University of Cardiff) The segment on Edward can be found by forwarding to the 36:45 mark of the audio link (below):

I didn't see anyone with a video camera but there was a photographer there from 'The South Wales Echo'. As I live in the circulation area I'll look out for the article and post a link.
