"16166 S: COLLAR MKR. B. SHELFORD, R.A." Benjamin Shelford, from St Mary's, Huntingdon, enl, aged 23, at Aldershot 4/1/1879, served in the Zulu War gaining the South Africa Medal & clasp "1879" & in the Boer War gaining the QSA & 3 clasps in addition to his LSGC, disch 1902."

Had a quick look through the R.A Rolls and I think found our man , R.A 6th Bgde , N Battery Commanded by Major LeGrice , F.T.
Gunner 4166 B. Shelford Medal with 1879 Clasp.

I have to agree with you, 14 years is a long time in one country.

The other interesting thing about his Service is that he joined the Service in Jan 1879 and only a month later (51 days), he was sent on Active service in a foreign land.
He did not return home until 15 years later in December 1893.
