"The Kaffir and Zulu War medal awarded to Colonel Farquhar Glennie, 24th Foot, who was dangerously wounded at Intaba-ka-N’Doda in April 1878, later commanded the 1/24th Regiment, and was afterwards Colonel Commandant of the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8-9 (Captn. F. Glennie. 2-24th Foot.)

Farquhar Glennie was born in London on 10 June 1843. He was commissioned as Ensign into the 9th Foot on 31 July 1860; Lieutenant, 26 February 1864; Captain, 26 March 1873; exchanged to 24th Foot, 12 August 1874; Major, 1 July 1881; Lieutenant-Colonel, 9 June 1886; Colonel, 9 June 1890; commanded 1st battalion 24th Regiment, 9 June 1888 to 9 June 1892.

Captain Glennie served in South Africa from 2 February to 10 July, 1878, and from 1 March 1879 to 12 January 1880. He served in the Kaffir War of 1877-78 and was dangerously wounded in action at Intaba-ka-N’Doda on 30 April 1878. He afterwards served in the Zulu War of 1879

After completing his 4-year term in command of the 1/24th Regiment, Glennie was placed on half-pay, 9 June 1892. He was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Military School of Music, at Kneller Hall, on 20 September 1894. It is recorded that ‘the Colonel is an excellent violinist and the fortunate possessor of two Strads.’ Colonel Glennie was one of the co-authors of the first regimental history, Historical Records of the 24th Regiment, which was published in 1892. Glennie served in South Africa according to his service records:

South Africa 2/2/1878-10/7/1878 (with 2/24th coming out on transport Himalaya with 2/24th returned aboard Nyanza?)

South Africa 1/3/1879-12/1/1880 (returned aboard transport Clyde - then attached 2/24th)

The Prince Consort's Library in Aldershot was open to the public today as part of Heritage Open Days. Pretty much untouched since it opened in 1866, it would have been used by many of the officers who served in the AZW. This is one of the libraries copies of Historical Records of 24th Regiment which I would very much like in my collection.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There is another interesting connection to the AZW. The library was paid for and maintained out of the private funds of the Prince Consort. When he died Queen Victoria continued to pay its upkeep until her death in 1901. The management committee then wrote to ask Edward VII to continue the tradition, but the old reprobate refused! The War Office was approached to see if they would fill the gap - their response was "what library?". Then comes the AZW connection, Evelyn Wood who was by then officer commanding Aldershot District had been an avid user of the library in his junior days. He weighed in managing to extract £60 per year out of the War Office - just enough for the library to survive.
