| Hi Graves . Thanks for that , it now makes sense , I have a feeling Thomas Lane may have been covered before . As he is one of 8 unfortunates to have forfeited their V.C'S . He is indeed on the Forsyth Roll under the Natal Horse . It also states since 1920 the Forfeiture of VC'S was discontinued , and it appears his Zulu War Medal with the 1879 Clasp was also forfeited . Terry Sole's book ; ' For God , Queen & Colony ' has the same information . cheers 90th. |

There would have been quite a few in the Zulu War around that age, or younger. |

| Les,
We hoping for mid-2015 release possibly at Trinity College, Dublin.
The illustration is entitled The Drums of the 24th it accompanied a short story of the same name written by Captain Charles Gilson, that appeared in On Guard edited by Herbert Strang, published circa 1919.
I think the Japanese took the print to heart after their forces fought alongside the S.W.B.'s in World War 1.
BTW check your e-mails for a laugh!
Regards,
John Y.

| Henry Frederick Winchelsea Ely of the 99th Regiment of Foot was born in Modreeny, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. He reached the rank of Major General. He also served in the Chinese Opium Wars and captured the Chinese Emperor's Clothing which are now on display in the The Rifles (Berkshire and Wiltshire) Museum. I think his lineage is extinct but he had one daughter.
He is a grand uncle of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Henry Ely of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry who was killed in Action in Tunisia in 1943. |

| Lorryloads,
I hope you don’t mind me correcting your last paragraph.
The 99th fought in two major actions of the Zulu War, the Battles of Nyezane, 22nd January 1879, and Gingindlovu, 2nd April 1879.
Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel Ely was part of the besieged garrison of the KwaMondi Mission Station, Eshowe, between 23rd January 1879, until its relief on 3rd April 1879.
Regards,

Fantastic research with regards to Patrick Collity.
Does the photograph of him appear in his obituary?
Could you post a copy of his obituary on the forum?
