Captain Francis Doyle, of the 2nd Dragoon Guards, served in the Zulu War of 1879-80. Captain Doyle also served in the Egyptian War of 1882, but died of his wounds on the 2nd of December.

He accompanied Sir Garnet Wolseley to South Africa in May 1879, and was employed on special service till the conclusion of the campaign in Zululand as Commandant at Headquarters of the Army.
