| Yes, I don't have custody of any medals to colonial units in my collection and I missed out on the one to the NMP some months ago, despite bidding what I thought was a reasonable 4 figure sum. |

| Just over half a day to go. Almost £600 for a medal to an officer of the NNC. Not too bad, one may think. Snag is, there is no documentary evidence whatsoever, that links this name and rank with this medal. A permanent question mark will exist. I'm out. |

He was an NNC Officer, served with 1/1 NNC from late 1878, medal not on the roll but this is not that uncommon with medals to Colonials/Irregulars. Jager1 |

| Source?
The docs shown in the advert do show a Wales, but on one the initial is M J and on the other G M. On the medal we have M G. |

| Local General Orders - these were published in various Natal newspapers at the time giving details of recruitment, promotions etc. |

| OK, many thanks Jager. I don't have access to these. Were you able to confirm the name precisely as "M G Wales"... and did you win it? Tasker |

| Yes its M G Wales , order 208 28th Nov 1878 (Times of Natal 2nd Dec).
The page from 'War Comes to Umvoti' sais M J Wales but the J will just be an error, probably copied from another Order of the time - errors with initials and surname spellings are pretty common in these |
