| Request for Naval Brigade material
I am conducting research on the Naval Brigade and its activities during the Zulu War. Original source materials are difficult for me to acquire, and some publications that I am looking for are out of print.
I am looking for letters, diaries, and journals written by those who served ashore in the Naval Brigade, or who remained on board ship; I am aware of two or three which were written. Lt. Craigie (HMS Active) wrote a diary, part of which was quoted in the London Times. Sub-Lt. Thomas G. Fraser (HMS Active) also wrote an account of the battle of Inyezane. Petty Officer 1st Class Benjamin Marshall (HMS Shah) also wrote a diary. There is another by Lt. John F Ryan (HMS Tenedos) held by University College, Cork, Ireland. Re-prints of letters that were published in the newspapers are also welcome.
Among the books and articles which I am seeking are:
“Letters from Lieut. P.F.P. Hamilton, R.H. Artillery, Lieut. E.O.F. Hamilton, 2nd Queen Royal Regt., from Afghanistan, 1870-80; and from Lieut. W. Des V. Hamilton, R.N., from Kaffraria & Zululand, 1877-78-79”, Dublin Steam Print Co., 1881.
“Commodore at Simon’s Town, 1879-1882, HMS Boadicea, HMS Shah, HMS Forester,” by Mervyn Whitmore Richards, published by the author, 1973.
“Admiral Sir James Startin, K.C.B., A.M.” by J.S.F. Startin.
Royal United Services Institution Journal, Volume 26, Issue 118, 1882 “Naval Brigades” by Captain J. H. Fletcher Campbell, C.B., R.N.
Naval Historical Collectors and Research Association, Spring 1997 (Vol.9.4) “HMS Forester Medal Roll
“The Royal Navy and the Anglo-Zulu War” by John Dickson (Natal and Zululand Post, Volume 9, Number 1, March 2005)
If you have anything which you could share, especially first-hand accounts, I would be very much interested in them.
If you had an ancestor (Navy or Marine) who served with the Naval Brigade, and have information about their time ashore during the Zulu War, I would also like to read about that.
Lastly, I am looking for naval correspondence regarding the Zulu War. I have been able to find quite a bit on the internet, but am missing a lot from the latter part of the war. I know that in their 6 Volume work “Anglo-Zulu War, 1879,” by John Laband and Ian Knight, there is quite a bit of naval brigade correspondence in Volume 5. Unfortunately, that book is not available in any library to which I have access.
Any help that can be given is greatly appreciated.
Petty Officer Tom
