I am unable to find a Greaves listed for the 3rd NNC but there is a Private J Greaves listed under the Frontier Armed and Mounted Police.

| Hi Littlejohn, I concur with 1879Graves, I cannot trace any one of that name in the NNC either on the Medal Roll or my list. The nearest name you get is Graves, who was the Regimental CommanderCommandant of the 2nd NNC and he was not at Isandlwana. One other point to consider is that in the proposed ranking structure laid out for the NNC, no rank of Private is quoted although both Troopers (in an infantry Corps ) ten in total and three Privates are listed on the Medal Roll. The Battalions to which these men were attached is unknown barring one Trooper of the 5th Battalion.

| Hi All,
Ref Local General Orders No 213, 3rd December 1878, concerning the posting of officers to the NNC: Captain E.L. St. John Greaves to 2nd Battailon, 3rd Regiment. Also F.W.D. Jackson's "Isandhlwana 1879 -The Sources Re-Examined" lists in the appendix, Captain St. John Greaves amongst those out of camp with Chelmsford's force at the time of the battle.
Regards
Phill |

| Hi Phill Well done for finding that information on Captain E.L. St. John Greaves to 2nd Battailon, 3rd Regiment. But this still does not add up with the article that Littlehand posted. Even if he was out with Chelmsford's force that day but later told people that he escaped the battle, it does still not explain the rank of Private bit in the article |

| Hi 1879Graves . I think the term '' Escaped '' the battle means that he was lucky enough to have been with C'ford , not using it Literally saying that he ''Escaped '' the battle in Person ! . Hard to put into words but I'm sure you can figure it out what I'm attempting to say . :lol!: :lol!: cheers 90th. |
