Tankard link to Zulu battle
Published on Tuesday 28 June 2011 08:41
"CONCERNING the article in Saturdays News Letter about the mural tribute to Belfast soldier Richard Mussen who fought at Rorke’s Drift in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu war: I purchased a silver tankard in a Ballymena charity shop last year, only to discover when I cleaned it that it was presented to Lieutenant Barre Phipps, South Wales Borderers, who also fought in the same conflict at Rorke’s Drift.
I have done a limited research on Lieutenant Phipps. It was confirmed he fought at Rorkes Drift but I can’t find out what happened to him.
I am intrigued as to how such a precious object ended up in a charity shop in Ballymena. Perhaps there is a connection." |

| Hi Littlehand
Both did take part in the War, but not at Rorke's Drift.
Lieutenant A B Phipps was transferred to the 1st Battalion after the Battle of Isandhlwana, and subsequently acted as orderly officer to Colonel R T Glyn during the advance of the 2nd Division; was present at the Battle of Ulundi (severely wounded).
Private 2833 Richard Mussen, 2nd 24th, Medal but no Clasp.

| Private Richard Mussen was buried in Belfast City Cemetery, Section R1, Grave Number 128. If we have any Irish members willing to have a look and see if his grave is marked with a headstone, please post photos if possible. There are only a few graves to check in R1 Section [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| From the Belfast telegraph 1936.
"The death took place on Sunday at his home 22 dundee street (shankill rd) belfast of MR.RICHARD MUSSEN,who saw active service in the zulu war.The late MR MUSSEN,who was in his 76th year, joined the Royal Inniskilling fusiliers (27th Foot),at the age of 15,and on the outbreak of the Zulu War three years later volunteered for active service. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers (24th Foot),and was one of 65 survivors of that regiment which held the position at Rorke`s Drift against repeated Zulu attacks.
In 1880 he was invalided home.On the outbreak of the Great War he joined the 9th Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles (36th Divison),and with him went his four sons and two sons in law. He was drafted to home service, and after being stationed at Ballykinler and Clandeboye was put on munition work. Full military honours were accorded the funeral, which took place this afternoon at the city cemetary" |
