Hi SergioD.
First of all welcome to the forum , not sure what price the ' Lines ' medal will go for , but once the winning bidder pays the 20 %
Hammer fee and whatever other expenses he will accumulate ; there wont be much change from 10, 000 GBP'S . The Keane
and Secretan Medals I think will be the most expensive of those from the AZW of 1879 . After all there were only 27 ? NMP KIA
at Isandlwana . Salute .
cheers 90th.

Thanks - I know DNW have certainly had some interesting AZW medals recently . I know it is so easy to froget the premium and the VAT on the premium !! in the excitement of bidding. Will be interested to see where it comes out.

Hi SergioD.
Well done , a good get . The following from ' The Noble 24th ' by Norman Holme ......
Lines , John , 2-24 / 2227. Sergeant .
Born at Sibford Ferris Oxfordshire , Transferred from 1 /24th ( 1-24 / 897 ) to 2 /24th 15 / 3 /70. Promoted Corporal 31 / 1 / 72.
Sergeant Circa 1874 , Served in A Co . In action Baillie's Grave 7 / 4 / 78. He was beside 102 Pvt Collins at the time of his death
in that action , In a letter dated 5 / 10 / 78 at Pietermaritzburg , he states - '' I had a very narrow escape of being shot by the Kaffirs - at Bailey's Grave there was one man shot dead only 3 yds from me . I expect I should have shared the same fate only
I was lying down and he was standing up , but as soon as I got to my legs the bullets came around me like hail ''. ( Regimental Archive ) . South Africa Medal with Clasp 77-78-79 ; Issued 25 / 8 / 82.
cheers 90th. Salute

Thanks 90th - now the fun starts - plotting G Companys role and position during Isandlwana and looking into the Action at Baillie's Grave (which I had never heard of).

Happy Days

Hi Segio
We will never know with any real accuracy where each of the companies were positioned. Different suvivors place them at variance. G companys final position is pretty much without doubt. The bodies were recognised by Bassage and located at there picket position of the preceeding evening.
Different authors/historians have them on the extreme right of the line others have Lonsdale on their right. But pretty much they faced onto the right of the conical koppie and bore the brunt of the left horn when Durnford retired.

Regards

Hi SergioD.
Dont know if this will help but I have ' The Frontier War Journal Of Major John Crealock ' - Edited and Introduced by Chris Hummel. Bailie's Grave Post is mentioned on pages 27 , 31 , 33 , 35 , 44 .46 , 47 , 50 , 59 ,67, 68, 74 , 86, 142 , 147 & 148.
I havent read it yet , its one of many I havent had the time to read . Suspect . But if you find a cheapish copy it may be worthwhile grabbing . The ISBN is 0620144556 . Hope this has been of some help . Salute
cheers 90th. You need to study mo

Hi SergioD.
' The Road To Isandlwana ' by Philip Gon has a footnote on page 152 which states the following about Bailie's Grave ;
'' The post , abandoned after the last frontier war , had acquired its sinister name in 1835 , when a Colonial patrol led
by a Lt. Charles Bailie was ambushed and massacred in a nearby Kloof '' .
cheers 90th. Salute

Hi 90th

I found some ionformation Re the action on Bailies Grave at Royal Regiment of Wales website - it references the death that Lines refers to in his letter . This was the only casualty on that day.

Cheers
