| No I dont believe they did. There was a fear that the families living in and around the disputed territory would be targeted. What kept the major tribes in Southern Africa under the thumb was the fear of the white man. Particularly after the Eastern Cape wars. By defeating the British the Zulu and their kin in Rhodesia would effectivly have free rein in combining against the farming community. Thats really why Kambula was so critical in local politics. Possibly the Boer would have enjoyed seeing England getting a bloody nose, but not being defeated. They had their chance a few years later.

| False, the only contingent Boer is with Wood, and it is tiny and is considered as of renegades by the Boers ... |

| I agree with Springbok. In general, the Boers may not have liked the British, but they liked the Zulus even less. A Zulu victory in a battle was one thing, but a Zulu victory in the war would have been a disaster for the Boers as well.

Hi Brett /Springbok, Absolutely correct and well put. Most of the Boers had no love affair with the British. But the general Zulu threat terriffied and unnerved them. They had had many run-ins with the Zulu's ( the Boer battle of Blood River was fought not too many kms to the west of Isandlwana) and well knew the enormity of the military threat facing their people. Thus, the Isandlwana defeat dismayed them no end. It is even on record that, prior to the Britsh campaign in Zululand, that the Boers even gave the "smart" Chelmsford very good advice on how to protect his forces against any possible Zulu onslaught, but this was ignored by Chelmsford with "Imperial" disdain ,and of course, the rest is sad history.

| True , if the Zulus had won the war, the Boers were no longer has to return to the Cape Colony.
However, some British defeats were good for their morale ...
And I also think that the miseries of the British imperial army in front of the pedi in 1878, then in front of the Zulu in 1879 and those of the British colonial troops in front of the Basotho in 1880, are among the factors that make the Boers that they had all their chances in 1881...
Cheers
