"LIEUTENIANT-COLONEL GEORGE MICHAEL JAMES GIILES,
Bengal Medical Service (retired), died at Plymoutlh on
August 24tlh, aged 62. Ho was born on Decenmber 20tl,
1853, tlle son of the late Captain George Giles, R.N., and
educated at St. Mary's Hospital; He took the diplomas of
M.R.C.S. and L.S.A. in 1876, tlhe degree of M.B.Lond. in
1877, and the certificate in sanitary science and tle
F.R.C.S.Eng. in 1880. He acted as hlouse-surgeon at St.
Mary's and served as a civil surgeon in Soutlh Africa, in
the operations gainst the Galekas in 1878, and in the
Zulu war of 1879, receiving the medal witlh a clasp. He
entered the I.M.S. as surgeon on October 2nd, 1880, became
surgeon-major ln October 2nd, 1892, and lieultenant-colonel
on October 2nd, 1900,- retiring on Januarv 15th, 1901. In
his early service he spent some years as surgeon naturalist
in the Indian survey slhip, the Royal Indian Marine steamer
Investi ator, and in 1886-87 accompanied the late General
Sir William LocKhart on an exploring expedition in tlhe
Pamirs. Subsequently lhe went into civil employment in
tlle Central Provinces, and later was transferred to the
Sanitary Department in the North-West (now tlle United)
Provinces. After hiis retirement he lived for some time at
Plymouth, and later on settled at Portsmoutlh, Coulnty
Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. At the beginning of the war
lhe joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps, witlh which
he came to England, and was for some time in charge of
Bencote House Hospital, Oxfordl."
