| Colonel William Leslie Davidson, C.B., Royal Artillery, Gentleman Usher to the King, died of heart failure at Rouen on August 3 while on active service. Colonel Davidson, who was 65 years of age, was the second son of the late Patrick Davidson, LLD, of Inchmarlo, and entered the Army in July, 1869, obtaining his coloneley in April, 1900. In 1875-7 he was A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief, India, and in 1881-2 to the government of Gibraltar. Colonel Davidson was wounded in the Zulu campaign, 1879, and was mentioned in dispatches. He saw active service again in the Afghan War, 1880, and in the South African War, where he was Colonel on the Staff for Royal Artillery. He was present at the relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Dreifontein, and Karee Siding; and for his services, which were mentioned in dispatches, received the Queen's Medal with four clasps and was made a C.B. Colonel Davidson, who had been Gentleman Usher to the King since 1913, married, in 1887, Lady Theodora, eldest daughter of the 7th Earl of Albemarle, and leaves two sons and four daughters. His nephew, captain D. H. Davidson, Seaforth Highlanders, was killed on May 9. |
