90th,

I can confirm that Raw's memorial is in the same Commercial Road Cemetery, Pietermaritzburg, as George MacLeroy's.

I'm shocked to see it is still damaged though.  It was damaged in 1991 along with some other Zulu War graves by some drunken so-called "freedom fighters."  The cemetery adjoined the offices of the then Natal Museum Services who I was visiting at the time regarding the display at the museum at Rorke's Drift.  Museum Services were aware of the damage and said that efforts were under away to repair the damage.

Shortly after returning to the U.K. I had a meeting with MacLeroy's great-nephew, whose great-grandfather's grave is next to that of Trooper MacLeroy.  He was so concerned that he made contact with cemetery's authorities and sent banker's draft to make good the damage, it is sad to see that his money was not put to good use.  I will bring Tim's photograph to the family's attention.

Hi 90th,

The various memorials which include the Natal Carbineers/Buffalo Border Guard/Natal Mounted Police etc. are in St. Peter's Old Cathedral in Pietermaritzburg (Colenso's original church) - also here are plaques to Durnford, Shepstone, Younghusband & Russell.

The Old Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg is where you can find the graves of Raw, Macleroy & memorials to Troopers Deane & Jackson of the Natal Carbineers.

I am currently looking into whether there are any other Zulu War/Isandlwana-related graves in there.

Regards,

Tim

Tim,

Thanks for the information on that - another place to visit on my next trip.

I found Melmoth Osborne's grave in that cemetery back in 1991, but don't ask me where it was though.
