LH,

On the link to Writtle, do you have an address, and a period of time he lived there?

As it is about 15 minutes away from me here in normal circumstances, but it flooded out that neck of the woods at present.

Sorry John I don't, but it will give me something to search for. Be interesting to see a photo of how the place looks now.

Ciroferrara,

Born in Ireland it would appear, Kenny might be able to assist further if the Museum is open.

I checked the place name given in The Noble 24th, but drew a blank.

He is indeed in a group photograph of the 2nd/24th:

24th,

Does it give an address?  Much of the centre of the village around the green and duck pond is unchanged from 1874.   I have a friend who is an amateur genealogist who lives in the village and might be able to assist further.

The only thing I can add....George Stanhope Banister - his father was Surgeon-General George Banister of the Bombay Army. He died age 64 in Eastbourne 6 Dec 1884. GSB was born 4 Apr 1850 - I can only suggest the place of birth was possibly India.

The 1st Battn. South Wales Borderers in Egypt in 1893.

Banister is the seated figure fifth from the right.

Major H.G. Mainwaring, standing first right.

The older officer with the cross belt, rather than sash, I believe to be Quartermaster J.J. Tomkins.

Hi All

1901 census shows he was living at Burghill, Herefordshire and was then Lt Col. SWB., born India. In 1888 he was in Richmond Barracks, Dublin. In 1861, age 11, he was living at 10 St Leonard's Terrace, Chelsea with his Fasson Grandmother. Married Mary Gwendoline McConnel at St Stephens Kensington, 1888; father George Banister (deceased), Surgeon General.

John Y,

Whilst you are usually very sound on your identifications - the older officer I believe is Colonel Farquhar Glennie (another AZW veteran) - Captain Quartermaster John Tomkins had a size larger waist.

Kenny,

I thought he had too much hair to be Glennie, plus the ears protrude more than Glennie's.

Any idea as to General-Officer with the group?

Regards,
