7th June 1879. Teste River, Hindegates (?) Column.

letter written by G.K. STOREY

"My Dear Jack
4th March 1879. Helpmekaar. 'We have arrived here at last and are now only
5 days from our destination. I dare say you have heard a lot about this
place but it is not much of a crib(?). There are about a thousand men here now and a kind of fort, there are no news at all the only commander moving at all in Colonal (sic) Woods and he is not doing much now.'
24th April 1879, Balks (?) Spruit, '...I am all right from the two big fights Zoblane & Kambulla, both which I was engaged in and had some narrow escapes. P.S. I have chucked up the 2.M. Sergt. Billet and am now duty Sergt. which I like much better.'

26th May 1879, Wolf Hill, have been promoted to Sergt Major now so did not lose anything by chucking up.

7th June 1879. Teste River, Hindegates (?) Column. we have had another
go in at this place Syrao (?) Krall (sic) and 20 miles from the Kings
Krall we did not lose many men in the engagement, there was only troops enganged belonging to Bakers Horse the Light Horse Lancers & Dragoons. The Lancers lost their adjutant shot through the heart we had only one man wounded and three horses wounded but my luck stood to me again and I came out all straight. I begin to rather like this fighting now, but I do not think I shall stay after my six months are up. There is too much hard work and bad rations, and another thing, this is a damn bad corps besides in the last fight the niggers took to the bush as we are now getting into the bushy country I expect it will all be over before my time is up.'
