| 1265 William Gibson was quite a character.
He was born in London in 1842 and enlisted in the 4th Foot on 21 June 1859 at the age of 17. He absconded the next day, before he could even be attested!
But he was apprehended as a deserter on 17 July and ordered to serve - which he did for the next 21 years.
At the time of his service in the Zulu War he was a Sergeant, not a Private. But he was reduced to the ranks again in 1880 just before he retired.
His papers show he appeared in the defaulters book 35 times of which 4 were trial by court martial.
He also served in Canada.
