Lt Charles Jameson NNC

I noticed the post about Lt J. Jameson's stain glass memorial window at St Vincent's Church at Isandhlwana recently and was surprised to find that Julius was alive and well whilst it was his older brother Charles Jameson that was killed.

I've looked through Charles's estate papers in the Cape Archives and it clearly stated he was killed at Isandhlwana and his younger brothers Julius Pringle Jameson and Samuel W. Jameson were settling the estate in 1881….Julius lived for some years until 1889. Presumably it was some kind of error when they ordered to window to be produced.

Charles was born In Edinburgh, Scotland in 1844 and appears to have resided in King William's Town for a period. Interestingly the estate papers state that his horse was sold in Natal for £20….did someone ride his horse out of Isandhlwana or was it a spare that didn't cross the border?

One of Charles' younger brothers was Leander Starr Jameson who was destined to be a great name in South Africa. In 1879 he wasn't even a blip on the radar.

Last year when I was doing some work on Leander Starr Jameson, I thought then he could possibly be related to Jameson of Isandhlwana but didn't have time to pursue the possibility. It was only until a couple of months ago that I found a definite link that Charles Jameson died in 1879 of which his estate papers revealed all.
