| In the thread 'Overheated Martini Henry, Neil Aspinshaw mentioned two official reports on long range tests and a third report written by Lt Kays. 1)Memorandum by the siege Operations committee on Long Range Musketry Fire at Dungeness" and Report on the Field Firing, 1878-9 2)The report from 31st December 1881by Lt Kays Musketry Inspector of the 2nd Battn H.L.I, I have had a search on the web and I can't find either of the reports, does anyone have a link for them please? or am I just going to have to wait for Neil's book. Regards Waterloo |

| Waterloo you wont find them on the web, thats why its taken over five years of tracking this stuff down and only doing fact. Here's just some of what you need, but a comprehensive list will appear in my bibliography anyway.(which oddly other Authors on the Martini tend to neglect to disclose, thats why sometimes the facts are a bit.... hazy but polished bright for effect) Your two primary places are Kew National Archives and the Original RSAF Pattern room Library held at the Royal Armouries Leeds. Kew is free, Leeds Library is now £10 per hour, the pattern room is now a hefty £25 per hour.
You need in particular 1) War department Supp/ 5 /896 Part I and II Martini Henry Rifles Reports of Small Arms Committee Jan 18th 1881 2) Supp 5/ 895 Martini Henry Rifles: Reports and Minutes of conferences 1873-1876 3) Supp 5/ Question as to the Jamming of Cartridges Solid v Rolled Case March 1885 4) Supp 5/ Martini Henry Breech Loading Rifles Reports of the Special Committee. 5) Supp 5/ The Report on the Jamming of Cartridges in Martini Henry Rifles and Complaints with Regard to Bayonets Egpyt. 15 October 1885 to 19th April 1886 6) Annual Reports of the Superintendent of the RSAF 1873-1886 7) The Reports of the Special Committee on Small Arms, the War office Wed 2nd September 1885 8) Minutes Taken at the War Office Army: Manufacturing departments 1878-1887 9) Annual Accounts of the Ordnance factories for the years 1879-1892
good luck, take your sarnies and red bull.

Thanks Neil for your response, I like reading technical information on weapons and thankfully we have people like your good self that have made an effort to do the in-depth research. You say that it took five years of tracking down information, 'now that's dedication', I'm sure that I speak for everyone when I say that your work on the MH is greatly appreciated. I have a number of books on various firearms and for the most part the authors of some of my books have included a very detailed bibliography which is very helpful, especially for those of us that like to learn more. I'm looking forward to reading your book and perhaps it may even help to clear up those questions that are repeatedly mentioned here on the forum. Once again, thanks for researching the Martini Henry for us. Waterloo. |
