I have been attempting to find more information re the death of Pte/Cpl C Hine.
Not having uncovered anything, I find that I am coming across quite a few of the
personnel of 1st Battalion, 13th Foot. I do not know if any of this is new information
to anyone, but I would like to share it anyway.

The War Office Sep 9th 1879. The following return of casualties has been received by
The Secretary of State for War from the seat of war in South Africa.
Bugle-Major P Cockeing - disability, 5th July Utrecht.
Lt G a Pardoe - gunshot wounds of thighs, 14th July.
Pte R McLarni - peritonitis, 16th July.
Pte W Shepherd - gunshot wounds of chest, 11th July.
Pte J Davis - gunshot wounds of head, 6th July.
Bugle-Major Cockeing - gunshot wounds of head, 6th July.
Supplementary return of wounded in action on 4th July 1879 at Ulandi.
Cpl J Walker - gunshot wounds - slightly.

These are just the men from 1st Battalion, 13th Foot mentioned. However there are
quite a few members of other Regiments list there as well e.g. 60th, 88th, 90th, 91st etc.
If it would be helpful to name all of the people in these Gazette articles I would be willing
to do so. I realise our web site has lots of records and could probably have all this info.Salute

The main document is WO25/3474 - Casualty Returns for the Frontier and Zulu War - however this is not always entirely accurate. It was from this ledger that the entries were made in the London Gazette and onwards the local/national newspapers.  Held in National Archives at Kew - not available on-line.

You would probably best to look at the Pay & Muster Returns ledgers for 1/13thFoot - which is WO16/1454 - deaths appear in the supplementary pages at the end of each quarter return.  Again held in National Archives at Kew - not available on-line.

There is a book - Casualty Roll for Zulu and Bustuto Wars - by I T Tavender (published 2004?) which is compiled from WO25/3474

Thanks for that Kenny. I will visit Kew and look at the records.
Will arrange a date with them for me to go.
