A carte-de-visite of Brevet Major Walter Parke Jones, whilst serving with 3rd Company, Royal Engineers in London, circa 1881/2, wearing his campaign medal. As a Captain, Jones had commanded 5th Company, R. E., he was responsible for the entrenching and fortifying the depot at Helpmekaar following the disaster at iSandlwana. When the stores were relocated to Dundee prior to second invasion 5th Company constructed the fortifications around the sheds which previously been at Helpmekaar, naming the position “Fort Jones”. 5th Company were assigned to Wood’s Flying Column and as such were present at the Battle of Ulundi.
