Any member blatantly corresponding in a deliberate and provoking manner will be removed from the forum as quickly as possible after the event.

We are all here to communicate and enjoy the various discussions and information on the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. Opinions will vary, you will agree and disagree with one another, we will have debates, and so it goes.
There is no excuse for harassment or bullying of anyone by another person on this site.

DEATH OF MR JAMES SPENCER OLD SOLDIER AND POLICEMAN After a tedious illness, of fifteen weeks with bronchitis. culminating in heart failure, Mr James Spencer, 18, Oldhams terrace, known to wide circle of friends as "Jimmy." died on Sunday morning, aged 68. He was a native of Marylebone, and when only seventeen enlisted in the 17th Lancers (the Duke of Cambridge's Own). in which he served for thirteen years, going through the Zulu war, and also being with his regiment for several years on Indian duty. Leaving the Army at Hounslow with the rank of a sergeant, he Joined the Metropolitan Police. Alter twelve months in A Division, he was appointed to the Mounted Police, in which he served at Hayes for seven year's. He then came to Acton when he was attached to the local police-station for about fifteen years. Retiring on a pension in 1908 he obtained employment with Messers Athawer. Son & Co.. as a caretaker. and he worked regularly for them until his last illness. A man of sterling character and genial disposition , he was popular with all to whom his duties had made him familiar, and much regret is felt at his death. He held several military medals, and, as mementoes of his police service, the Queen Victoria Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals, and the King Edward VII. Coronation medal. He leaves a widow, two sons, and two daughters His elder son, who won the military medal in the war, is serving with the police, at Kentish Town, and his younger son is still under treatment for wounds received in the war. The funeral. which was attended by several old military and police comrades, took place at the Old Cemetery, Church field-road, yeaterday afternoon."
