PostSubject: Pte Arthur Atkin   Pte Arthur Atkin EmptySat Aug 27, 2022 2:41 am

In the Brecon County Times 17 August 1933 Pte Arthur Atkin states that his name is included on the list of casualties at Isandlwana, on a plaque in the church in Brecon.
He states that they mistakenly included him as a casualty because he was in hospital with fever whilst the battle was taking place.
That being the case, I have read on these forums that the only hospital around was at Rorke's Drift.

If this is true, wouldn't he be one of the patients at Rorke's Drift, at the time of the defence.
I do not see a Pte Arthur Atkin on the roll of defenders.

Is this just another story?
He seems to have friends who were defenders.

This is a very old tale fully documented in the regimental archives - Arthur Atkins, a local lad, used to come in Brecon Cathedral and pointed out the visitors that he was still alive as his name was recorded on the AZW 24th Regt Memorial Plaque - 'Pte A Atkins' - good for a pint of beer as they say. The plaque reecorded the name of 1-24/1230 Pte Alfred Atkins who was killed at Isandlwana. Arthur Atkins himself was 25/1300 2/24th who lived in nearby Battle near Brecon. Arthur died at Battle 23.9.1939. He was not at RD on 22/23 Jan 1879.

Eddie, you would do better than just posting a quick and easy search from 'Welsh Newspapers On-line' by fully researching the story before posting the topic.

Thank you Kenny for that introduction.
I thought it may have been a tall story.
I had looked through the information available on this site but couldn't find anything about him.

The title of this thread is DID THEY OR DIDN'T THEY TAKE PART IN THE ZULU WAR.
That's all I was asking, as many have done before me.
I will endeavour to carry out research with the means I have. If I have a question I am entitled to ask it as anyone else on these forums.
I appreciate all the assistance I have received from many well known historians on the site and will continue to do so.
But I will take your advice and thank you for taking the time to reply.
