BROOK, Maj.-Gen. Edmund Smith, C.B. 1900; retired; b. 7 Oct. 1845; of George H. Brook of Egerton Huddersfield; m. 1885, Lisa, d. of M. Bourke of Ileclash, Fermoy. Entered army, 1866; Captain, 1878; Lieut.Colonel. 1882; Colonel, 1886; Major- General, 1898; served Zulu War, 1889, including Ulundi (medal with clasp) ; Boer War, 1880- 1881 defended fort at Marabastadt for 92 days (despatches, Brevet Lieut.-Col.) ; commanded 2nd Brigade Tochi Field Force, India, 1897-98(medal with clasp) ; special service South Africa 1902, commanding Harrismith district until end of war (des- patches) ; later troops Cape Colony District. Address: Cape Town. Club: Junior Army and Navy. [Died 17 Apr. 1910.

"He served through the Zulu War in 1879; the Boer War of 1880-1; commanded the 2nd Brigade of the Tochi Field Force in India in 1897-8, and was employed on special service during the Boer War . In 1904 General Brook succeeded Major General Miles in the command of the Cape Colony district, and acted as Administrator during the absence of Sir W Hely-Hutchinson."

Hi All,
E S Brook died 7 April 1910 at Balhowan Ireland and is buried in Castlehyde Cemetery Fermore Ireland.
Their is also a plaque to him in St Peter's Church Huddersfield.
Both monuments are on the findagrave website.
