John Casey was born at Mullingar, Westmeath in 1844.
He initially enlisted into the 10th Foot on 22 April 1858 as a Boy Drummer for the Bounty of ‘Free Kit’ at the age of 14years 6 months.
His service career was blighted by periods when he did not conform & as a consequence of his actions spent time in the cells. Promotion & a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal eluded him & this is his sole medal entitlement after 22 years of service.

Following his early service in the 10th Foot he transferred to the 91st in time to get involved in the thick of the fighting in South Africa in 1879. The 91st were to distinguish themselves in the Cape Frontier Wars & Zululand in 1879.
Arriving in South Africa in March 1879, the 91st Highlanders formed part of the Eshowe relief column. Taking part in the battle of Gingindlovu, they sustained the brunt of the second desperate attack by the Zulu warriors. Interestingly Zululand was to see the last action in which they were to carry their colours.
Casey was also with the small detachment of companies who were to serve in Mauritius from Oct 1879 – May 1881.

His papers confirm the award of the Medal & clasp & also state that he was eventually discharged in Cape Town in June 1881."

Sounds like a nice medal, particularly given the large amount of research on the man himself, that comes with it. Wangle a small discount off Jim, if you can, and this becomes an excellent investment.

I think John was just trying to preserve the text concerning this chap, once medals have been sold the history of this chap disappears with it.

Hi All .
Nice medal and it's also a reasonable price if it comes with some research . If anyone is keen , I'm sure if you asked Jim Bullock what's his ' best price ' he may take a little off for you as well . I've dealt with him previously and he is very reputable .
Cheers 90th. Very Happy
