Filter Larsen Monument – Heroes of The Zulu War In 1879 the German settlers were living in a laager at Luneberg where the British established a fort to help protect them from attack by Zulus. Larsen One afternoon, while on patrol, Major Schermbrucker and a young Danish soldier by the name of Larsen were ambushed by a Zulu impi. Then the major’s horse was killed, Larsen insisted that the senior man take his horse and flee. Because of this selfless deed, the young man was killed.
Filter Later the same year, Heinrich Filter, a seventeen year old youth, also met his death very bravely. He never hesitated when he saw a herd of cattle being driven away by the Zulus – who had already stolen more than 250 head of cattle from the farmers. He mounted the first horse he could find and galloped off after the thieves. He was ambushed and chased across the Pongola River, where he was ruthlessly stabbed to death. A granite monument was erected in honour of these two brave youths and can be seen at the crossroad where the roads split from Luneberg, Paulpietersburg and Piet Retief. |

| A bit more info on Johann H. Filter , he was born 16 / 3 / 62 , Son of Pastor Heinrich Filter of Luneburg. Johann volunteered his services to the British as an interpreter during the hostilities . As a result he accompanied many patrols against the zulu's. He was present at the skirmish on 5th April when Tshekwane KaSihayo was killed and prince mbilini was mortally wounded. On 7th June a large zulu force raided the farm of Mr. Niebuhr , close to the outskirts of Luneburg and within sight of the military camp. Filter with six native policemen set out after them. They caught up with the zulu's as they tried to cross the nTombe River. The zulu's turned to fight , Filter along with the policemen were all killed . According to one story, Filter was recognised as the Pastor's son by some of his attackers , who were inclined to spare him ; Others recalled his role in the death of Mbilini , and he was killed. This from ' Who's Who in the Zulu War 1879 ' by Greaves & Knight . cheers 90th. |

| Filter of Lüneburg was also involved in a heroic deed. While trying to stop Zulu warriors from stealing the cattle of German settlers, he was killed on the banks of the Pongola River not far from the bridge crossing the Pongola River on the road leading from Braunschweig to Paulpietersburg. Also on Patrol with Commandant Schermbrucker, another young Danish soldier named Larsen , was killed on 18 May 1879 near the Entombe River. A monument has been erected along the road leading from Braunschweig to Luneberg, to commemorate the heroic deeds of these two young men. Click here for Grave of Johann Heinrich Filter.
