Birth: unknown Death: c. 1891
Zulu Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Not much is known about him other than that his family was Irish and he was born in Grahamstown, Cape Province, South Africa. He was serving as a sergeant with the Cape Frontier Light Horse, South African Forces, when he performed the deed for which he was awarded the VC. From his citation: “On 3 July 1879 at Ulundi, Zululand, during the retirement of a reconnoitring party, a Captain of the 9th Lancers [Captain Lord William Leslie de la Poer Beresford] went to the assistance of an NCO of the 24th Regiment whose horse had fallen and rolled on him. The Zulus were coming up quickly in great numbers, but the officer, with the help of Sergeant O'Toole, managed to mount the injured man behind him. He was, however, so dizzy that the sergeant, who had been keeping back the enemy, gave up his carbine and rode alongside to hold him on. They all finally reached safety.” O’Toole was the first soldier born in South Africa to be awarded the VC while serving with South African forces. He later reached the rank of captain. The exact date of his death and the precise location of his grave are unknown. His VC medal is in private hands,

is that not very strange? i suppose it was simply ' easier '
to vanish without trace in those days. it echo's the strange
disappearance of Cecil D'arcy vc. there is a very good little
book entitled " what happened to a vc " by Patricia D'arcy

Wonder why he wanted to disappear in the first place?

Littlehand,

At the time the query was asked O'Toole was up in Mashonaland/Matabeleland in the employ of the British South Africa Company.

In The Black & White Budget of 4th August 1900, he is listed as ...a resident of the Cape.
