Due to recent events on this forum, we have now imposed a zero tolerance to harassment and bullying. All reports will be treated seriously, and will lead to a permanent ban of both membership and IP address.
Any member blatantly corresponding in a deliberate and provoking manner will be removed from the forum as quickly as possible after the event.

We are all here to communicate and enjoy the various discussions and information on the Anglo Zulu War of 1879. Opinions will vary, you will agree and disagree with one another, we will have debates, and so it goes.
There is no excuse for harassment or bullying of anyone by another person on this site.

| Liggins , Frederick Pontifex (1844-1932). Soldier, Syd.b. Lond. 1844 son of John L.; d. Syd. 29 Apr. 1932; m. Syd. c.1881 Minnie Phillips. Served Brit. Army Eng., India and Zulu War 1879: arr. Syd. 1881: became staff instr of volrs: with Soudan Contingent 1885: participated in Jameson Raid, S. Africa: fought in S. African War, wounded Diamond Hill: offr-in-charge Holdsworthy Internment Camp WWI. |

I could not find a Liggins listed on the Medal Roll.
I have found him listed in the 1851 & 1861 Census.
Came across the following: Warrant Officer NSWInf./'E'Sqn. 1NSWMR invalided to Australia severely wounded at Diamond Hill 12.6.1900, Mentioned in Despatches 19.4.1901 invalided to Australia arrived 13.9.1900, Warrant Officer NSW Govt. pension to 31.1.1904. Queen's South Africa medal and 4 clasps (Jbg. DH CC & OFS). letter dated 21.6.1900 from Pte. Vincent DANS/DAVIS 1NSWMR says LIGGINS got a very painful wound, a Mauser bullet passing from one shoulder to the other. Aust. casualties at Diamond Hill - Sergt. Major SIGGINS severely wounded. Warrant Officer F LIGGINS (Sergt. Major 2nd NSW Infantry Regt.) welcomed home to Waverley NSW. Medic sailed for Sydney 13.8.1900 with NSW Contingent invalids including Sergt. Major SIGGINS (LIGGINS) sic. WO LIGGINS Mounted Infantry assisting with matters connected with NSW troops returning from Africa 12.1900. Sergt. Major LIGGINS on the way to recovery in hospital at Pretoria c7.1900. letter dated Pretoria 17.6.1900 from Sgt. C BRAWN NSWMR says Mr LIGGINS (my old Sergt. Major of 2nd NSW Regt.) received nasty wound in shoulder. Christmas 1899 item from WJ LAMBIE mentions Colour Sergt. LIGGINS NSW Infantry who occupied same position in Egyptian Contingent. Frederick Pontifex LIGGINS alias JP LIGGINS 468 Col. Sergt. NSW Infantry Colonial Military Forces Sudan 1885, enlisted 23.2.1885 aged 42 years 2 months embarked 3.3.1885 on SS Iberia, returned to Aust. 23.6.1885 per SS Arab, soldier. Staff Officer LIGGINs, recently returned from S. Africa, instructing Liverpool Rifle Club 4.1901. WO F LIGGINS, retirement functions 8.1902 - severely wounded hero of Diamond Hill. WO LIGGINS drill instructor of Canley Rd. Fairfield NSW. Colonel WADDELL, 2nd Regiment, said at the Sergeant's Annual Dinner on 25.5.1901, ... Major BAYLY, whose distinguished services in the South African war, before he was captured by the Boers reflected honour upon the Australian soldiers (Cheers). He (the speaker) had it on the authority of no less a man than General HUTTON, that Major BAYLY had been a credit to his comrades in the 2nd Regiment. (Cheers) And to their dear old friend and chairman, Sergeant-Major LIGGINS, he did not think there was a man in the whole of the Australian forces sent to South Africa who man more generally respected and loved than he was. (Cheers). |

| Here is Frederic Liggins on the 1871 census in barracks at Winchester with the 58th regiment. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]And here he is on the Zulu War medal roll for the 58th, as 858 Sgt F."Leggings". I think that's Liggins with a cockney accent!
