The below photograph is from thew history of the 1st Battalion, Scots Guards and shows Colonel Pulteney's column at Isandlwana in September, 1901. The mounted men are most probably the 5th Victorian Mounted Rifles.  The Colonial Scouts also bivouacked at Isandlwana whilst riding out to the Nqutu Magistracy in early 1900.

What a wonderful photo.. Can anyone say what that large stack of stones represents. Would it be Durnford's last stand or is that too far away from Isandlwana.

I believe its just one of the many cairns scattered about although that one is quite large comparing it to the horse. The caption doesn't mention anything about the cairns.

Natal Field Artillery approaching Isandlwana probably taken fifteen to twenty years after the historic Anglo Zulu battle in 1879

It is very interesting. Having visited the area a number of times recently, I compared a colour image of mine taken from a similar viewpoint and what struck me most was the change in vegetation.

Hi Frank
Yes that's the large Cairn which borders the car park , Black's Kopie is to the left . The small track going up the hill on the right leads up to Younghusband's Cairn .

It says on the website that the NFA photo is from the Boer War. Presumably then they are on the original road from RD to Isandhlwana travelled by No 3 Column in 1879?
