Dynamite into a cave Empty
PostSubject: Dynamite into a cave   Dynamite into a cave EmptyFri Aug 04, 2023 11:13 pm

Hi All

South Wales Daily News, 27 June 1879:

Raised in Parliament:

The Zulu War

Colonel Stanley, in reply to Mr O'Donnell, said there was no reason to believe that Zulu villages were burnt from wantonness, but simply from military necessity, one definition of which, he stated, was that they should not afford cover to the enemy. He had no information that Colonel Brubent had obtained the surrender of certain Basutos by throwing dynamite into a cave.

PostSubject: Re: Dynamite into a cave   Dynamite into a cave EmptyMon Aug 21, 2023 10:48 am

Eddie,

The second half of the piece you are referring to has no relevance to the Zulu War, despite the newspaper’s headline.  It relates to Moorosi’s Stronghold in BaSotholand, hence the reference to ‘Basutos’.

‘Brubent’ was in fact Edward Yewd Brabant, of the Cape Colony’s Forces.
