3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, Dublin, 1884.

Sadly, they are not identified but there are at least five Zulu War officers in this photograph.

They are:
Major Reginald Thomas Thynne
Lieutenant Rupert Clement George Carington
Lieutenant Robert Gordon Wolrige-Gordon, (aka Gordon-Gilmour.) Served 94th Regiment in 1879
Lieutenant Archer Perry Crawley, Served 3rd/60th Rifles in 1879
Lieutenant William Augustus Lane-Fox-Pitt, Served 91st Highlanders in 1879.

I believe that Thynne is seated in the second row, fourth from the left, holding what could be a Zulu staff.

It is my belief that Wolrige-Gordon is seated in the second row on the right.

Anyone with any thoughts on this?

I unable to answer your question but as you know it was traditional to bring home 'trophies' of service. No luggage limits dictated by the ship transport.

Interestingly that you show 3rd Battalion Gren Gds for they recuited in South Wales from 1880s to 1914 before the formation of the Welsh Guards. So there were many Welshmen in that battalion in ABW.

There seem to be a number of officers in the photograph who would find it hard to pass their 'battle fitness test'!
