Dave

Thank you for providing that link. I wonder what Haggard would make of Natal if he could revisit it today? Physically the countryside is much the same, but I suspect that the greatly expanded human blots on the landscape and many of the people would disappoint him.

Regards
Brett

Haggard revisited shortly after the wars in 1881 and then again in 1914.
Quote: " Touring as a member of the Dominions Royal Commision Haggard found it hard to recognise the Africa of his youth."

His diary from 1914 is published as 'Diary of an African Journey". I bought the book on reccomendation from 90th, excellent buy and a very entertaining read. His return to isandlwana has a couple of interesting comments.

Grist for the future mill as they say.

Regards

Hi Springbok .
It is indeed an interesting read , I was wondering how ' Haggard ' would view the Africa of today ?. I purchased it on the reccomendation of a friend as well . It can be picked up fairly cheaply if you look around .
cheers 90th. Salute

I paid around GDP12 inc delivery.

Interesting quote though is: " Mr Parr however, the owner of the store where we slept, gave me a number of cartridge cases and the head of one of Durnfords rockets. He has another rocket dug out of the the bank of the donga near his store which is still unexploded. " Page 202.

That store was along side the old road that crossed over the Durnford Donga. So back to the head scratchin, if rockets were being fired from the donga, why dont we know about it? Take that one step further, the rockets were dug out of the banks that has to indicate they were being fired at Durford. Again that could only indicate that the regiment oposing Durnford was the regiment that over ran the Rocket Battery ( we know that as a fact) and did they then figger out how to use the rockets and use them on Durnford?

C,mon 90th, a touch of Aussie wisdom needed.

Cheers Mate
