Zulu names for the Shepstone family

Hi All,
The names given by the Zulus to this illustrious Natal family and the meanings, will be of some interest and also amusement;

Henrique : Gabuza a warrior who attacks with slashing, thrusting upper cuts like a fighting bull, but was none of these who in nature being in a gentle inoffensive man.

William : Unsonkonsokwana ; the tall thin and stately one.

Offy : Mhlakuvana , the little castor oil plant, forever going of pop like the seeds of this plant when expelled on ripening from the plant.

Alice : Ntombhazi, after Ntombhazi the mother of the Nxumalo Zulu chief, Zwide.

Arthur : Ummango a long steep incline , meaning that he was a man of determination, prepared to meet and overcome any difficulty. Ntabeni, or hill has a similar meaning.

Florence : Nozinyathi, or "Miss Buffalo", because of her plumpness she was like a young buffalo cow.

Walter :Khanda, the man with brains

Most interesting , I trust you are referring to the Colenso family here and "Galloping Jack's" progeny?

Barry,

It is the Bishop's descendant, and appropriately enough we are meeting outside Lambeth Palace.

I am returning some Colenso correspondence to the family, which will then be donated to the Library of Rhodes College, Oxford where there is a Colenso archive.
