F.A Campbell Natal Mounted Police.

He was awarded the SAGS. What is SAGS? There are other abbreviations, which I don’t understand so hoping someone can translate.

Hi littlehand,
SAGS is definatley South Africa General Service, like amberwitch said, its was similar to the South Africa medal, but without the reverse date and instead a trophy of shields and weapons. The ribbon too is similar but with differing shades of colour and stripes. In begun to be issued in 1880.

working on the rest of the abrevietions

hi
couple more here

QSA-Queens South Africa Medal

‎was awarded to military personnel who served in the Boer War in South Africa between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902. Units from the British Army, Royal Navy, colonial forces who took part (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India and South Africa), civilians employed in official capacity and war correspondents. The QSA (without bar) was also awarded to troops who were guarding Boer prisoners of war at the POW camp on the island of St. Helena

KSA-Kings South Africa Medal

The King's South Africa Medal or KSA was awarded to all troops who served in the Boer War in South Africa on or after 1 January 1902, and completed 18 months service before 1 June 1902. The medal was not issued alone but always with the Queen's South Africa Medal or QSA.

The KSA was awarded only to those troops who fought in 1902, and who had served for 18 months. Service did not have to be continuous, but even with continuous service the recipient would have had to serve from December 1900 to have 18 months service before the war ended in May 1902 (and commencing before the death of Queen Victoria on 22 January 1901). Hence the majority of participants qualified for the QSA only.

more to follow

Royal Navy Medals Known To Still Exist Empty
PostSubject: Re: Royal Navy Medals Known To Still Exist   Royal Navy Medals Known To Still Exist EmptySun May 23, 2010 10:57 am

"In 1880 it was decided that this 1853 medal should be awarded to all personnel—Colonial volunteers and native levies as well as British regular forces—who had served in any of the campaigns in South Africa between September 1877 and December 1879, namely the Gaika–Galeka War, the Northern Border War, the lst and 2nd Sekukuni Wars, the Moirosi's Mountain campaign in Basutoland, and the Anglo-Zulu War. A medal bar or clasp was to be attached to the suspender of the medal hearing the date or dates of the year or years in which the recipient had actually served in any of those campaigns. Any members of the military who had been mobilized in Natal but who had not crossed the Tugela River into Zululand, were to receive the medal without a bar. This included Naval shore parties.

Army Order No 103 of August 1880, which instituted the new South Africa Medal, made no mention of any change in design of the 1853 medal. However, the date '1853' was replaced in the medal's reverse exergue by a military trophy consisting of a Zulu ox-hide shield and four crossed assegais".

South Africa General Service Medal 1877-9

Description

The medal instituted for this campaign and issued in 1880, was similar in design to the South Africa Medal of 1853, but without the reverse date and instead a trophy of shields and weapons. The ribbon too is similar but with differing shades of colour and stripes. Twenty men are known to have served in both the campaigns of 1853 and 1879.

The medal could be awarded alone or with one of the following seven clasps along with numbers awarded:

No Bar 5,600
‘1877’ 150
‘1877-8’ 5,820
‘1877-8-9’ 3,520
‘1877-9’ 8
‘1878’ 2,000
‘1878-9’ 1,180
‘1879’ 18,330

A total of 36,608 medals were issued to British and Colonial troops, which included 1,829 medals awarded to the following RN ship’s, HMSs ‘Active’, ‘Boadicea’, ‘Euphrates’, ‘Himalaya’, ‘Orontes’, ‘Shah’, ‘Tamar’ and ‘Tenedos’. An undetermined number of medals were unclaimed and were returned to Woolwich.

PostSubject: Re: Royal Navy Medals Known To Still Exist   Royal Navy Medals Known To Still Exist EmptySat Jan 22, 2011 8:40 pm

Chard1879,

The majority of these names I have found over the past 6 or 7 years. I recently put the list together over the last couple of days. (with a little encouragement from 1879graves.)

Of the 2794 navy and marine personnel awarded the 1877-79 medal for the Zulu War I have only been able to find these 225 medals. (Just under 10%.)

To make this list I searched all major dealers in medals, ebay, geneology and anything else that pops up on the internet. All names listed have been checked against the medal roll for each ship.

I am still trying to located more medals and add their recipients to the list. All help appreciated.

Hopefully people searching medals in their possession will find this forum and add to the list.

CF71,

Good find! Thank you.

Samuel Dawson, A.B. was part of the Shah's naval brigade and is entitled to the medal with clasp "1879". Confirmed on the medal roll.

Private Thomas Chard, Royal Marine, HMS Tenedos
ASHANTEE 1873-74, no clasp (Pte. R.M., H.M.S. Argus 73-74); SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Pte. R.M., H.M.S. Tenedos) the first a little polished, otherwise nearly very fine.

One would have to think that we only have the tip of the ice berg here, if we have 10% of the issued accounted for.
According to Chris Dixon in August 2005, 508 of 1710 NGS medals with Trafalgar clasps were known to be in existance.
This is some 30% and these were issued over 3 decades earlier.

tasker224,

I agree with you that 10% is a low figure for a medal that was issued just 130 years ago. Quite possible that many are in the possession of family members who do not want to part with them. The majority of the ones I have found were auctioned or for sale, and thus were on the internet.

I was hoping visitors to the forum would have kowledge of others and pass on the information. So far, only a couple of those.

1879graves,

Thank you for the Thomas Chard medal posting.

POT
I reckon you are right about the medals being in families' possession. Obviously as the decades pass, more will come on to the market.
I have been looking around but have not yet found any that you are not already aware of; I will keep looking!

Hi POT
sorry, not very helpful I know, but we can't say with any reliability that the medal to Dawson of HMS Shah above is actually his.
The naming is wrong.

always appreciate and respect a survivors list, but you must be young, or I am old.

W. North - SHAH 1879
Wm. Rose - Boad. 1879
R. Wheeler - Him no bar
G.J. Frampton - Eur. no bar
Wm Chapman - Boad. 1879
John Barry - Shah 1879
John Parkhouse - Shah

Sorry if they lack details, I am sure you can look the ratings up on the rolls.

Chapman and Barry pretty special...Chapman KIA at Majuba, and Barry aboard Shah's torpedo expedition!

Cheers....Pick

They are in my collection, but not Parkhouse, he was a check mark in my DM book. And aside from Barry probably bought over 20 years ago, so no wonder you aint seen them

also got G. W. Hogben no bar for Himalaya, with no bar Egypt Achilles and LSGC if you haven't got this one listed.

I may have one or two more to list, and then I could of course look through old catalogues....but that takes a lot of effort. Have you looked through all the on line databases like DNW and Spink?

Hi all!

I have added 23 more names to the list. Those added since 22 January 2011, are the ones in RED. The list for HMS Himalaya will remain active for now since they did receive the South Africa Medal; just not for the Zulu War.

Thanks to Pick, CF71, tasker224, littlehand, 90th and 1879graves for their contributions to the list.

1879graves,

Thanks. I will add Searle to the list. As of today, I have another 19 to add to the list.

redbatwing,

First let me welcome you to the forum. Glad to have you aboard.

Charles Hawkings, Pvt, Royal Marines is confirmed on the Medal Roll for HMS Tamar. On a different roll, he is listed as Charles Hawkins. Am I correct in assuming that his name is spelled “Hawkings” on your medal?

I saw your other posting about Carrick’s medal. What other 1877-79 navy medals do you have?

PO Tom, thanks for your welcome(also to 90th for the same)

Marine Hawkins is spelt as such on the medal but on his records it is Hawkings.

Other medals are:

To HMS Active--Frederick Rimington-Plumber.

W.Payne-Stoker 2nd class.

Joseph Jacobs-Stoker 1st class.

HMS Euphrates--C.Wingate-Stoker.

W.Spencer-Stoker 2nd class.

R.Redding-Leading Seaman.

HMS Orontes--J.G.Chambers-Signalman 2nd class.

I collect to Stokers if possible but do'nt discount any medals to R.N.

HMS Himalaya--E.J.Brook PO 2nd class.

HMS Tenados--W.Warner-Stoker.

HMS Shah--M.Morrison-Stoker-2nd class.

HMS Boadicea--H.Hughes-Stoker 2nd class

And of course Carrick-Forester and Hawkins-Tamar.

ratbatwing, any chance of posting some photo on the forum. There is a section "1879 Anglo Zulu War Historical Memorabilia." take a look at what's already in there, members collections, some real good items. Unfortunately this section is only on view to members. Its under the "Links to photos of the Zulu War" Section

Lieutenant R.W. Evans, no clasp HMS Tamar (Dixon's Gazette Winter 1996-97)
Engine Room Articifier J. Phillips, no clasp HMS Boadicea (ditto)
Chief Engineer T Sagar Royal Navy, no clasp (HMS Shah) (Dixon Gazette Spring 1995)

the last medal may not have the ship named on the rim, the catalogue implies it does not.

FYI

90th,

Thanks for that one. I will add it to the list on the next update.

William Likeman is confirmed on the Medal Roll as entitled to the clasp "1879". He served with the Naval Brigade of HMS Boadicea and would have been at the Battle of Gingindlovu. He was killed in action at Batanga 22 Mar 1880, and is remembered on the Boadicea Memorial. His medal was sent to his mother.

Here are a couple of medals in my collection that are not recorded on your list.

Henry Pink, Signalman 2nd Class, HMS Himalaya - No Bar Medal
Robert Cummings, Private RM, HMS Forester - Bar 1879

I was also the successful bidder on the William Likeman medal which has been referred to here.

Best Regards

Andy
