"Colonel J. S. Young served in the Abyssinian war in 1867-68 (promoted Deputy Purveyor, Medal). Daring the Franco-German war in 1870-71 he was Joint Commissioner at the Head Quartets of the German Army for the National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War, and at the conclusion of the armistice he took part in the relief of Paris (German War Medal, French Bronze Cross, and Silver Medal of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Anglia for saving life). During the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-78 he again acted as Chief Commissioner for the National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded. He also served in the Zulu war in 1879(Medal)"

Depy - Commy J.S.Young was in charge of the landing arrangements for all troops and stores which were sent to Natal . Received the thanks of the Colonial Govt for his services .
