Kate,

Private Thomas Ault of the Royal Marine Light Infantry served aboard HMS Boadicea during the Zule War and during the 1st Boar War.  His name is confirmed on the Medal Roll as entitled to the South Africa Medal without clasp.  On 23 November 1881 aboard HMS Boadicea, at the Cape of Good Hope, Thomas Ault was tried by court-martial for “First.  Using insulting language to his Superior Officer.  Second. Striking his Superior Officer being in the execution of his office.”  “Prisoner plead guilty to first charge.  Second charge partly proved, inasmuch as the prisoner did violently assault his Superior Officer.  Adjudged to be imprisoned with hard labour for two years, and at the expiration thereof to be dismissed from Her Majesty’s service.”  On 14 February 1882 his South Africa Medal was sent to Her Majesty’s Prison, Winchester, Hampshire.
