The Mercenary

Just a quick question. We know that Soldiers of fortune were operating during the Zulu War, but were they entitled to the campaign medal.

Hi 24th .
I suppose we could call the Colonial units mercenary ? . . As they consisted of many nationalities . Possibly John
Dunn and his followers were or could be classed as Mercenaries , and I dont think John Dunn or his followers were
entitled to the Medal . Happy to be corrected .

Volunteer, conscript, rather. Its fine line from there to mercenary. Maybe Maorie Brown could be defined as mercenary?

In general, the units under serving British officers performed best, while the colonial officers did less well. The mercenary officer was almost certainly the worst, but by only a slim margin.
