Who was 'Daniels'

Hi,

This has probably been talked of before but can anybody throw any light on 'Pontman' Daniels, who remained at Rorke's Drift, during the Zulu attacks.

He is mentioned in various rolls and books as being there but does not seem to be mentioned as doing anything 'particular', in any of the accounts - there was something about him waving Spalding's sword whilst questioning a native.

I believe his name (or initial) was 'A Daniels'

Does anyone know what he did before or after Rorke's Drift?

The man of mystery I'm afraid. He has been refered to as Yankee Dan, Caleb Wood tells of him being a man short of sture. There is only one official piece of info ive come across and that is his 'reward' for his actions at RD and that was a position with pay at RD on the ponts He does seem to have impressed Caleb Wood with his attitude.

you have probably already thought of this but is there anything on the SA Ancestry.com.

I have had a glance but I can not access it from my Ancestry.co.uk

They may have immigration lists or tax lists.
