In Holme's Noble 24th there are several references to "posted to the General Depot" (Pietermaritzburg) Not being an expert in the finer workings of the Victorian Army, what exactly was the duties of the depot?
Am I correct to understand it was an admin hub? New drafts arrive to be posted, time expired/invalids ready to be shipped home? Did it have a jail with Provost staff, hospital, stables etc? Who or how many men would be there?
Whilst googling info on the Brigade Depot at Brecon, I came across some statements saying that they took in about 8 intakes of recruits a year and posted out drafts on specific dates, unfortunately I didn't  take note of this and for the life of me can't find it again. Anyone come across any info like this?

Bill
