Afternoon,

Just a quick question for the more knowledgeable of the forum members, what would you consider a "must have" from the War Office documents at the TNA? I have apart from pay-lists etc copied the following so far:

WO 32/7706 Isandlwana Report 14 pages

WO 32/7726 Court of Inquiry 150 pages

WO 32/7729 Clyde Sinking 35 pages (with very smudged first three pages, due to the paper)?

WO 32/7737 Chard Report Rorke's Drift

Anything else ?

Regards,

Bill

Bill
The original Chard report with his original hand drawn maps is in the Royal Archives at Windsor. I do have a full copy that Im happy to send e mail, so scratch that of your list.
The COE is available on line in full so again easy access. From memory the North East Medals site has quite a lot of info as does this forum.

Good afternoon Frank,

Thanks, that would be fantastic. I take it you are referring to the much longer report Chard wrote personally for Queen Victoria? That would be a great help, it's always good to have copies of original documents. I have no idea how to gain access to that particular archive as of yet.

From my list above I have copied from National Archives Chard's official report to Horseguards (it would be great to have the other one) plus the COE/COI (they're the only four I've checked so far). Are there any other documents you would suggest "yep you really need to read/copy that one"?

Many thanks again,

Bill

Hmm sorry Frank, can't see anything that resembles a link. Are you saying the top of your message or page? Never used that Transfer before so maybe looking in the wrong place.

Cheers Frank, link worked fine in pm but not on the main board. Perhaps my settings are wrong?

Much appreciated.

Hi frank, I completely understand that research isn’t easy, what I was saying is that the op had copied his listed documents, when I tried to do the same on the national archives the message I got was that the documents were not yet digitalised so we’re not available I was just trying to establish how the op got copies of the documents

Danny,

In answer to your question, as stated by Frank above I had to book a visit to The National Archives and photograph them personally. What I was asking above was what other documents would the forum members deem essential to copy from there. I have a whole list of references to the Zulu War on a PDF and was wondering what else others had.

Frank again, thanks for the link, I didn't realise you sent it via normal email, I'd thought it was sent in the forum message somewhere. It was in my spam folder!

Oh ok I see now, I thought you could order them online, I did notice that they offer a copying service with postage it was about £8.40 per item…
Thanks for the reply
