| A little mystery about this chap
"Mr James Johnston , late of the South Wales Borderers , has died at the Scottish Naval and Military Veterans Residence, Edinburgh , where he was an inmate for over eight years . He served for 21 years in the Army , from 1864 to 1885 , and took part in the Zulu War , and was in possession of the South African medal . Mr Johnston was 75 years of age"
The Scotsman - Tuesday 15 November 1921
There are six private J Johnston's in Duttons in the 1/24th. (none in the 2/24th)
144 is John Johnston, with the 77-78 clasp. 2031 is John Johnston discharged 24.10.1885. Holmes has him as Johnson. 1925 is Joseph Johnston
Three were kia at iSandlwana. The only James Johnston in any of the medal listings for the 24th Regiment was Private 633 James Johnston but he was kia at iSandlwana. Or was he? |

| Nearest seems to be 1-24/957 Johnston (or Johnson), Frederick. Number 957 was issued early in 1864. Was Corporal on roll but reduced to Pte in 1881. Medal 77-8-9. Was H Company.
Or 1-24/1440 Sgt Johnston, J. Duplicate medal (77-8-9) issued in 1918 - which suggests he may have been still alive then. Number 1440 was issued in 1867. |

| Hi All Carry on from Kenny's post, 1440 Johnston at Malta 1871 b.Elgin Scotland 1846, on 1881 census 1/24th at Colchester, J Johnson B.scotland b.c 1847, this would all fit but i cannot find any death record at present for 1921. Rai Keynshamlighthorse |

| Chaps James Johnston 1440 Corporal (Lance Sergeant) 1st SWB discharged 22/12/1885 after 21 years service. Attested 6/5/67. Discharge documents sent to Royal Chelsea Hospital. Wo 121 - Chelsea: Pensioners' Discharge Documents 1760-1887.
Just a thought if he was a sergeant and he died in a military hospital would they not have shown his rank in the obit? |
