There were two men named John Donovan, from county Cork, who received the South Africa Medal without clasp.

One was an Able Seaman who served aboard HMS Boadicea during the Zulu War and the 1st Boer War but did not serve ashore in either conflict. He was discharged in 1883.

The second was a Signalman who served aboard HMS Himalaya in 1877 and 1878 and received the South Africa Medal without clasp for the 9th Cape Frontier Wars but saw no service in the Zulu War. He later entered the Coast Guard and retired in 1908. This is the man in the newspaper article. His Zulu War story about being in the column sent to relieve Colonel Pearson's force at Ekowe and being wounded are fiction.
