During the first phase of the Zulu war, Lieut. Main, (who had served throughout the Cape Frontier campaign, and afterwards as Engineer officer with Glyn’s Column in the Transkei), served with Pearson’s Column, being present at the battle of Nyezane and throughout the subsequent occupation of Eshowe (mentioned in despatches). Served during the second phase with Newdigate’s Div. and the Flying Column until after the battle of Ulundi.
