In a letter the Missionary JD Engelbrecht (my Great great grandfather) wrote to Th Shepstone he clearly states that from reliable sources he knows that the Zulus do not want war! Sending copy of letter to Admin for posting.

Hi Johann.
I dont think there is much doubt about that . The War was instigated by Frere WITHOUT the sanction of the British Government .

I think it is very clear that the war was instigated by the British for the purposes of colonialism and that Cetshwayo was put into an ever increasingly impossible position and war was inevitable once Shepstone et al decided that Zululand was to be dismantled.

A completely immoral war, wrong by any standard.

Cetshwayo and the Zulu people did nothing to provoke war, other than mind their own business.

Look 4wd to seeing the letter, Johann.

The letter is kept in the Soth African Archives in Hamilton Street Pretoria under the Transvaal Archives (Utrecht Archives). I do agree that it probably has never been open to public view in this way!

Johann

Thank you for sharing that letter. It makes one realise that there must still be many items in archives and with families that are relevant to the understanding of the Zulu War and other events in South Africa.

Brett
