Hi DB14,
Was this Col Black the Maj Black of the 24th who lead the expedition of NMP troopers to Isandlwana on about 2 February 1879, to recover the 24th's colours?

DB14,
There was a Captain Henry Buckton Laurence in the 2nd Battn., 4th (King's Own Royal) Regiment, who was based at Helpmekaar, appears in Mac' & Shad' as Lawrence (sic). I've got an engraving of him somewhere as he was later killed in subsequent campaign whilst serving in a South African unit, having resigned his commission.

From "Selected Writings of the Late William Moorsom Laurence" ibid.

DB14,
Then that would be Assistant Commissary W. M. Laurence of the Commissariat & Transport Department, who performed Transport duty at the Hq.-Qrs. at Pietermaritzburg...
I think I've got an engraving of him somewhere as well!
