| Can anyone shed some light on where the NNC, NMP, NNH and similar originate. Where they local conscripts Or mercenaries, paid for by the British Government. In the Film Zulu Dawn the NMP were white men not black. |

| I think you find that most of theses regiments were made up of local boar farmers, who volunteered with the promise of land, not sure if they were paid anymore or any less than the average British soldier. John Dunn had a couple of hundred native followers when he joined up with the British. Well, I say joined. He never had much choice really. |

| Believe it or not, Durnford was the one that drew up the letters, stating the proposals for the conscripts of the thousands of colonial Zulu. Which was to be brought in the when the invasion of Zululand commenced. It was Durnford who formed the NNC and the NNH.
Chelmsford who had commissioned Lonsdale asked him to speak to old soldiers who had fought in the Ninth Frontier War. Lonsdale arrived in Natal in November 1878 with 190 white conscripts, who would be come officers or NCOs of the NNC.
Ruffians and ex-convicts formed many of the other units like the Border Horse, Raaffs Rangers, and Bakers Horse. And of course there was John Dunn’s unit of scouts.
Hope this Helps

| hi all.
interesting observation in CTSG"S previous post. BORDER HORSE casualty E. GRANDIER K.I.A. HLOBANE 28TH MARCH. according to many articles he may have been the only prisoner taken by the zulus , he was found 16th april near ZUNGWINI MTN. from I. KNIGHT, " COMPANION TO THE ZULU WAR". GERHARDUS RUDOLPH said " staggering towards them in the veldt was a solitary white man , tall ,wiry, dark in his late 20"s. wearing a ripped and torn irregulars jacket , infantry trousers cut off at the knee. he was bruised , battered and scratched all over, and incoherant . rudolph could hardly make any sense of what he was saying. he was taken to WOOD at KHAMBULA. where eventually he told his story, there are plenty of sceptics who think GRANDIER may have tinkered with the facts a trifle , including BERTRAM MITFORD who travelled zulu land in 1881, i think. and of course the zulu side of the story. the full account is on pages 78 ,79,80.
cheers 90th. |
