Major General Tongue served in the Kafir war in 1877-78, and was present in the engagements in the Perie Bush and at the Taba ka Udoda; also served in the Zulu war iu 1879, and was present in the engagement at Ulundi (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).

J.M.G Tongue was a Bvt Lt Col 1/ 24th during the AZW , served with the 2nd Batt until he obtained his Majority in Jan 79 , subsequently served with the 1st Batt throughout , present Ulundi .
